Manuscripts

Standard rate: $45/hour, plus $15 service fee*

Grad student** rate: $35/hour, plus $15 service fee

 

LIGHT COPYEDITING

Approx. 1,250 - 2,500 words/hour

You are satisfied with the manuscript, but you want me to correct errors in grammar, spelling, and usage; point out confusing sections; ensure consistent and appropriate style; and check cross-references.

MEDIUM COPYEDITING

Approx. 500 - 1,250 words/hour

You know that the manuscript is “rough” and you want me to point out where your ideas are not clearly communicated. You want me to correct errors and suggest rewrites of difficult passages.

HEAVY EDITING

Approx. 250 - 750 words/hour

You are not confident in your writing and want significant help ensuring that your ideas are clearly communicated. You want a heavy hand, and may want me to substantially rewrite or rearrange sections of text. You may also want help with broad, structural issues.

 

NOTE FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS: You face unique challenges when you express your ideas in a language you did not internalize as a child. There are subtleties that are difficult to learn, and English is full of inconsistencies and contradictions. Because of this, most English language learners will need at least medium copyediting. I will also provide comments explaining rules and conventions so you can apply my edits to your writing in the future.

NOTE FOR STUDENTS: I will only do light or medium copyediting if you are writing a class paper, a thesis, a dissertation, job application materials, or anything else for which you are being evaluated.

 

*The $15 service fee accounts for time spent organizing files, calculating estimates, creating an invoice, and so on. This fee is in lieu of charging the higher hourly rate for this work.
